Taking its social penetration to another level, Facebook has decided to team up with Skype to offer free video calls.
The agreement, announced by Facebook Chief Executive Mark Zuckerberg at the company's Palo Alto, California, headquarters on Wednesday, deepens the company's cooperation with Microsoft Corp, which is presently in the process of buying Skype.
Facebook also said it has more than 750 million users, up from 500 million. “We're using the best technology that's out there for doing video chat with the best social infrastructure that's out there in order to create some really cool new scenarios,” Zuckerberg said during a presentation at the event.
For Skype, the partnership with Facebook is a chance to expand its 170 million users base. Recruiting some of Facebook's users as potentially paying customers is also being looked at.
Google recently launched Google service, which also has a feature that allows video calls. With Facebook's video chat launch, the two tech giants are now locked in a head-to-head technological race.
